CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURE -The terminology "Civil Infrastructure" covers a vast outline of applications that includes; Roads, Highways, Bridges, Ports, Harbors, and Building Systems. Over the past 15 years, Domestic as well as International Engineering firms and end users have recognized the benefits of Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc. structural line of products. In addition, the U.S. Military, as well as the Army Corp of Engineers have also recognized the benefits our products offer and have designed and specified them in several applications.
Several of our earliest projects that brought attention to the public eye was the Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply, and Installation of the 1,856' composite deck and under structure of the Huntington Beach, CA. Pier. In addition to the West Coast exposure, Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc. indirectly supplied over 1000' of custom colored, custom designed handrail as well as structural components that make up the 14 flights of stairs and landings that rise up from beneath the 185' depth of one of the nation's leading scenic attractions, Niagara Falls. The determining factor of selecting Bedford's Pultruded material was its lower life cycle cost. < Back to Top

CONSTRUCTION - As with the Civil Infrastructure market, the Construction market host many separate markets. Some of the most recognized applications include Catwalks, Staircases, Raised Flooring Systems, Handrail Systems, Stair Systems, Caged Ladders, and Platforms.
The most notable job in Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc. recent history is the manufacturing and supply of over one dozen different profiles to the Bellagio Hotel on the Las Vegas strip. < Back to Top

CONSUMER & RECREATION - Various structural & non-structural components make up the consumer / recreation market. They are typically non-structural components classified as unidirectional profiles, (reinforcement in the longitudinal / lengthwise direction only ). Examples of this market are: solid rod, flatstrips, tension bars, tool handle inserts, and bow slats.
The structural components that are supplied to the consumer / recreation market are proprietary designs focusing their efforts to family entertainment. For additional information on the status of these projects, please contact our office. < Back to Top

COOLING TOWER - After many years of utilizing Redwood because of its natural tendency to inhibit decay, the quality of Redwood diminished and Douglas Fir was introduced to the market. However, the negative effect of Douglas Fir was that it deteriorated rapidly in comparison to the Redwood. Various methods of pressure treatment and incising were developed to off set the micro-organisms that attacked and eventually depleted the wood.
In addition to the wood being supplied and utilized by the Tower Market, other materials such as galvanized steel, stainless steel, concrete, and in some cases asbestos cement board casing panels were utilized on field erected towers.
During the 1970's, the environmental movement caused several industries to be scrutinized. The chemicals used to pressure treat the wood were viewed as possible hazards, therefore resulting in tighter controls and new formulations to be applied. The end result was an increase in the material cost of wood. Asbestos was also under scrutiny and ultimately dropped from the industry due to the threat it posed of potential health hazards.
Through the 1980's and into the early 1990's, various existing Cooling Tower companies as well as newly formed organizations were looking for alternative building materials that would offer comparable if not greater strength to the materials being utilized while remaining competitive. Paying close attention to the competitiveness between these materials, Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc. recognized the possibilities that the industry could offer and made the commitment to complete the "Standard Structural Product Line". There was also a need to address part consolidation and offer design assistance on developing custom and /or proprietary profiles.
It is Bedford Reinforced Plastics belief that the utilization of Pultruded Fiberglass shapes had its largest growth and recognition during the mid to late 1990's. The double-digit increases are largely due to the cohesive efforts of the qualified manufacturers and the Tower companies coming together to establish and adhere to industry standards.
In addition to the collective efforts of such organizations as the CTI - Cooling Technologies Institute, great strides have been made with the Raw Material Suppliers that support our company. Several proprietary glass, pigment, and resin systems have been internally developed allowing the industry's best employees to consistently produce a quality product that is second to none. < Back to Top

CORROSION RESISTANT EQUIPMENT - Unlike traditional materials such as stainless steel, galvanized steel, and pressure treated lumber, Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc.'s Pultruded structural shapes and custom profiles can be tailored to meet specific corrosion requirements.

Fabricated systems offered by our clients include: raised flooring areas, secondary containment, pump, floor and wall pump base units, platforms, stairs, and Handrail Systems. < Back to Top

ELECTRICAL / ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS - Once again, compared to traditional building materials such as steel, aluminum, and wood, Bedford Reinforced Plastics product line offers greater advantages due to the simple fact of being non-conductive, lightweight, and corrosion resistant. Bedford has successfully produced and supplied a broad range of products for different electrical applications. These applications range from a complete line of Cable Tray and Cable Tray Components, Ladder Rails, Transit Installations, Electrical Enclosure Units, Communication Tower component parts, FRP cross arms for new or existing utility poles, as well as many shapes to the Telecommunication Industry. < Back to Top

MARINE FRONT / OFF SHORE - Being corrosion resistant, Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc.'s profiles are ideal for waterfront and offshore applications. Simply said, when Bedford's products which are environmentally friendly through the Non-Leaching characteristics as well as no harmful preservatives added as found in wood, are immersed in water or subjected to a wet environment they will undoubtedly out perform traditional building materials. Wood rots and is susceptible to various types of marine woodborers. Steel will rust, and when the pH level of the water is either too low or too high, aluminum will deteriorate.
Additional benefits recognized by the off shore market are the fire retardant and non-conductivity properties our products offer. In an environment where fire or spark is the main threat, many companies have focused their attention to creating a safer work environment for their employees as well as protecting the million dollars of investment of each off shore drilling rig.
With the recent introduction of a proprietary interlocking seawall system, and the utilization of Bedford's standard stocked composite Deck Board profile, the marine front industry is slowly taking on a new look that will certainly out last their traditional counterparts. < Back to Top

MILITARY - When the United States Military identified deteriorated, warped, and often splintered troop seats in the back of their 2 1/2 ton troop transport vehicles, they turned to the only practical alternative. They replaced these wooden fold down seats with a selection of Fiberglass Reinforced Pultruded systems manufactured by Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc.
The custom one piece fold up seat section allows troops to enter and exit the vehicles with little or no obstructions. The radius edges of the seat and back rest system offer a snag free environment for military personal to rapidly deploy the vehicle in offensive situations. Also, the lightweight composite material allows the military to overall enhance their payload capacity with additional troops, weapons, and supplies.
In addition to the design and lightweight benefits of this product line, it also offers the same benefits of all the products we manufacture. < Back to Top

TELECOMMUNICATION - With the aggressive and attractive marketing skills of various wireless communication companies through out the 1990's, a high number of cell sites soon dotted the landscape in large metropolitan areas as well as rural suburban areas. These sites, which include satellite dishes and antennas, soon became a topic of conversation among many zoning boards across the country. They were viewed as being non-aesthetically pleasing to the surrounding architecture of the area or the building on which they were installed.
Working in parallel with the wireless communication industry and zoning boards, several companies were started in the early to mid 1990's focusing their efforts on designing, engineering, supplying, and in some cases installing cell site concealment or otherwise referred to as screening systems. The design and engineering departments had to establish a cost effective solution while maintaining maximum RF pass through capabilities. The concealment system also had to be structurally sound as well as aesthetically pleasing to the surrounding environment.

WATER / WASTEWATER - Since the early 1990's the water / wastewater market has grown by double digit increases each year. Opportunities to replace traditional building materials such as wood, aluminum, stainless steel, and other thermo set materials contribute to the growth of the market. Another key factor for growth was the recognition from many Engineering Firms and end users specifying fiberglass pultruded material.
These markets typically consume more custom profiles rather than the standard structural product line Bedford offers. With the versatility and strength of the products, several component parts of traditional materials have been consolidated into one piece fiberglass pultruded profiles. This not only allows savings in annual purchases but also offers savings in many logistical matters from freight, internal handling, and assembly of the finished units, to the ease of installation.
Bedford Reinforced Plastics, Inc. offers many different profiles including. Sludge Flights, Trash Racks, Cell Dividers, Components Parts for Troughs, Parallel Plates, Gate Guides, Odor Containment Covers, Walkways, Handrails, Ladders, and the newly introduced Weir and Scum Baffle product line.
